Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation (GSP)

 

General Information

The Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation (GSP) test is a way to determine whether students in the School of Journalism & Media Studies (JMS) at San Diego State University (SDSU) have sufficient command of English to indicate probable success in the curriculum and in related careers. The GSP consists of 100 multiple-choice questions in three areas: 33 questions cover grammar; 33 questions cover punctuation; and the final 34 questions cover spelling. Students need 80 (or more) correct answers to pass the test, which is a 90-minute timed exam. Students are allowed three attempts to pass the GSP.

Who Needs to Take the Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation (GSP) test?

If you are seeking admission to the Advertising, Journalism, Media Studies, or Public Relations majors in the School of Journalism & Media Studies, you must complete the GSP with a passing score.

Registration Procedures

Fee information:

The exam fee is $25.00. Admission Tickets are non-refundable and may not be transferred to another individual.

Date/Time Transfer Policy:

To transfer to a different exam date and/or time, you must bring your Admission Ticket to Testing Services (SSW 2549) by 12:00 p.m. (noon) the business day prior to the exam date. Testing Services is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Print Admission Ticket:
You must bring a printed copy of your Admission Ticket to be admitted to your exam. Electronic copies are not acceptable. To print your Admission Ticket, click here.
Students Requiring Accommodations:

Students requesting testing accommodations must follow these steps:

1. Register for a regularly-scheduled exam (see above)
2. Register with SDSU Student Disability Services (SDS), who will authorize appropriate accommodations for each test requested.
3. Once SDS has placed the appropriate accommodations on the Testing Services reservation system for the specific exam you are requesting, email SDSU Testing Services at STAAR@mail.sdsu.edu with your name, Red ID number, exam(s) for which you have registered, date of exam(s), and a request for testing accommodations.
4. Once your request is approved, Testing Services will email reporting instructions for the exam. Please review the information carefully and bring a printed copy of the email as your Admission Ticket.
5. Accommodation requests must be received at least 2 weeks prior to the exam to ensure your accommodation(s) is available.
