College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Testing for the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is offered at San Diego State University for SDSU students and applicants, the greater San Diego community, and active-duty military (through the DANTES Program).

The CLEP program affords participants an opportunity to obtain college credit, satisfy course prerequisites, and/or meet general education requirements by exam. Potential candidates should contact the university to which they are applying or attending to determine which exams will be accepted, what credit will be granted, and what scores will be required.

The CLEP exams are 90 to 120 minutes in length, primarily multiple choice in nature, and administered by computer. For all exams except those involving an essay, the candidate will receive the results at the conclusion of the exam. Multiple exams may be taken on a single day, but a particular exam cannot be retaken within a 6-month period. World language CLEP exams have online instructions in English only.

To register, candidates should log onto the CLEP website (www.collegeboard.org/CLEP) and pay in advance. The registration ticket must be presented at SDSU Testing Services to sit for the exam. Candidates may only sit for the specific CLEP exam indicated on the registration ticket.

According to the University Policies section of the SDSU General Catalog, CLEP credit is accepted at SDSU.
