“Down, But Not Out!!”

Dr. Tanis Starck spoke from her newly published book And Her Name Was Katrina: Life After the Storm.

Dr. Starck was the keynote speaker for the African American Business Women of Vision's Prayer, Networking and Vendor Breakfast in July 2011. Her report of her experiences with Katrina were emotional, eye opening, and memorable. We are excited to hear about her newly published book!! Dr. Tanis Starck is a diversity advocate, noted speaker, and published author. Her most recent accomplishments include creating and implementing the first certificate program in Cultural Competency in the entire California State University System for undergraduate students along with publishing her book, And Her Name Was Katrina: Life After the Storm, a personal guide through a reflective journey of social justice and inequality in America.

A survivor of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Starck relocated to San Diego from Tulane University. As a result of her achievements as the Assistant Dean of Students for San Diego State University, within two years a new department was created specifically for her, the Intercultural Relations Department, of which she has been the director ever since. Within the Intercultural Relations Department Dr. Starck oversees the Cross Cultural Center, The LGBT Center, The Women’s Resource Center, the Annual Diversity Conferences, and of course the Cultural Competency Certificate Program. Dr. Starck’s accomplishments in the area of increasing diversity in higher education span decades.

It has been her personal mission to ensure that opportunities are accessible to all of those from historically underrepresented communities. Her impact can be felt from the thousands of her “children” that spread across the nation.
