Financial Information

Studying abroad can be entirely affordable and comparable to the costs of attendance at SDSU.  You can utilize your federal, university and departmental financial aid award!

If not already, we encourage you to submit an application for financial aid even if you do not think you are eligible for additional aid.  The SDSU Financial Aid Office will take into consideration expenses such as airfare, increased living expenses, health insurance, and loss of employment while abroad as part of your aid package.

Further questions should be directed to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at (619) 594-6323.

Before You Go:

In order to utilize Financial Aid while abroad there are some key steps you must take:

1. Review the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships webpage dedicated to Study Abroad.

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

3. Search for available scholarships. Consult our scholarships page as well as the main university scholarships.

4. Students going on SDSU Exchange, CSU International Programs and ISEP Exchange should have their financial aid released normally as the term begins at SDSU.

5. Students going on ISEP Direct and Independent programs must complete additional paperwork prior to departure.  Consult your program provider if you are unsure of how your credit is issued.

  • Students participating in programs with academic credit issued by a US accredited university must complete a Special Enrollment Agreement.
  • Students participating in programs with academic credit issued directly by an overseas institution must complete a Contractual Agreement.

6. Sign up for direct deposit of funds so you may access them while abroad.

Another important part of your financial preparation is budgeting.

1. Utilize this Budget Sheet (xls or pdf) to estimate all costs.

2. Visit the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships website for the official SDSU cost of attendance estimates.

Note: documents in Portable Document Format (PDF) require Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher to view, download Adobe Acrobat Reader while documents in Excel format (XLS) require Microsoft Viewer, download excel.

While Abroad:

1. Maintain full-time status! Your financial aid may be adjusted or reduced if you fail to maintain full-time status. Check with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for clarification.
